Utah (part 2): the Great Salt Lake, Antelope Island, and bison up close!

While on our trip to Utah in May, we went to see the Great Salt Lake.

Coming up to the lake. The white is dried salt left behind when the sun causes the water around the edges to evaporate.

Through the gap there, that’s a water-way to get to Antelope Island in the middle of the lake.IMG_2256

Having fun throwing rocks into the water.IMG_2270

And this road is the land-way to get to Antelope Island. This is the way we went.IMG_2314

And another antelope! (This was all for the day, though.)IMG_2383

These were the first bison we saw, and we were thrilled!IMG_2367 IMG_2395

A herd!IMG_2407

After driving around the island for a while, we got to this old (converted, now) ranch and stopped to look around.

And guess what! More bison!IMG_2637

But it got even better. Out behind the ranch, there was a bison herd quite close by!IMG_2655 - Version 2

As we were leaving, the bison herd was on the road we were taking to get out. They were behind us, but we backed up to get closer 😀 IMG_2688

That’s one jumping up on another 😉 IMG_2695

This is pretty much my prize photo of all time 😀

And then this rather bad photo was taken through our dirty windshield and shows the herd in the act of stampeding across the road! I was practically out of memory card space so I couldn’t get a video. But it was SO COOL.

Getting to see bison, and to see them that close up, was an incredible experience, one that I thank God for.
